Journal (SSOL)

Scientific Study of Literature (SSOL) is the official journal of IGEL (the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature). IGEL membership includes a subscription to SSOL.

SSOL is an interdisciplinary endeavor that publishes manuscripts that utilize an empirical approach and make a significant contribution to the understanding of literary phenomena in different media formats (text, film, drama, performance, etc.).

Contributions can come from a range of disciplinary perspectives (psychological, sociological, cognitive, computational, neuroscience, educational, applied linguistic, composition and literary) and should explore phenomena of interest on the textual, psychological or social levels. Studies that utilize literary genres as part of their research methodology will also be considered.

We encourage papers that utilize new research methodologies and make a contribution to the understanding of the interaction between literary phenomena and empirical inquiry. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are all within the realm of the journal.

SSOL is the primary outlet for research that sits at the intersection of literature, media and scientific inquiry.

For a more in-depth description, read The scope of SSOL: A discussion of the boundaries of science and literature by David I. Hanauer.
This journal is peer reviewed and indexed in: LLBA, MLA.
